Meetings and Presentations to Groups

  • June 25, 2019- The Seniors Advocate attended an Adult and Seniors Sector meeting to brainstorm with service providers/organizations on data needs and opportunities for collaboration in the sector. The Advocate presented on the roles of the Office of the Seniors Advocate and provided an overview of the advocacy and recommendation work of the office.
  • June 21, 2019- The Seniors Advocate gave opening remarks at the inaugural conference of the Society of Alberta Occupational Therapists entitled “Bringing Seniors into Focus”. The Advocate spoke about the role of occupational therapists and allied professions in contributing to the health and wellbeing of senior Albertans and the importance of being mindful of ageism and its manifestations in care practice.
  • June 20, 2019- The Seniors Advocate attended the annual general meeting of TREC (Translating Research in Elder Care) to hear about new research coming out of the work of the research group.
  • June 19, 2019- The Seniors Advocate gave a presentation about the impacts of age stereotyping and ageism in communication with, to and about older adults at a meeting of the Alberta Seniors Care Coalition. The Advocate provided guidelines to avoid unintended ageism in written and spoken messages.
  • May 22, 2019 – The Seniors Advocate met with a community service provider to receive input on programs and experiences with resolution support mechanisms for persons in care and/or receiving health care.
  • May 10, 2019 – The Seniors Advocate met with the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta to hear about her interests in seniors issues and to highlight the work of the Office of the Seniors Advocate and discuss the concerns of senior Albertans.
  • April 26, 2019 – The Seniors Advocate met with representatives and the president of the Fédération des aînés franco-albertains (F.A.F.A.) to hear about need of and programs for Francophone seniors in Alberta.
  • April 24, 2019 -  The Seniors Advocate visited a supportive retirement community in Edmonton to learn about the Butterfly Model/approach to care for persons with dementia.
  • April 23, 2019 - The Seniors Advocate met with a community stakeholder to hear about a  United States model aimed at increasing access to assistive devices for persons with functional challenges through loan, reuse/recycle and financing programs.
  • April 4, 2019 – The Seniors Advocate attended an event organized by the Elder Advocates of Alberta to listen and receive feedback from seniors as they made presentations on their experiences with government programs and services.
