Federal Income Support programs

Old Age Security (OAS) is the largest of the Government of Canada’s pensions. It is a monthly payment available to seniors aged 65 and older who meet the Canadian legal status and residence requirements. Seniors may need to apply to receive it.

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to Old Age Security (OAS) pension recipients who have a low income and are living in Canada.

The Allowance is a benefit available to low-income individuals aged 60 to 64 who are the spouse or common-law partner of a Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) recipient. There is also a Survivor benefit under this program.

Canada Pension Plan (CPP) provides contributors and their families with partial replacement of earnings in the case of retirement, disability or death. There are six types of CPP: retirement pension, post-retirement pension, disability benefit, survivors’ pension, death benefit and children’s benefits.
